Why do riots happen?

A violent public disorder caused by a group of people behaving in an uncontrolled way.  Riots are ‘a troubling and recurring phenomenon’ that has captured the attention of societies throughout history. This public disturbance has characteristics of violence, chaos, and civil unrest that leave a long lasting effect. But what exactly is the reason that influences an individual to participate in such acts? Why do riots happen? In this feature story we will study all the factors relevant to the causes of such acts.

Economic reasons:

One of the major reasons behind the occurrence of riots is because of the uneven distribution of resources. Inequitable distribution, combined with a lack of opportunities and social mobility, led to resentment and frustration to the public. After some time this frustration makes an individual interest spark in social justice. That led them to partake in unethical means such as riots or social unrest.

Religious reasons:

In a society where people with different beliefs, thoughts, culture, religion lives together. It is inevitable for religious violence to happen.  Religious violence does not exclusively include acts which are committed by religious groups; instead, it includes acts which are committed against religious groups. These riots are often led because of some agenda; it can be for political reasons. For e.g. when a political party needs to gain support from the public in their favor.

Political reasons:

Riots can be driven when public deems the governments as lacking, Or when the fundamental rights of the citizens are being violated. People then starts protesting which ultimately turns into riots. Riots may result from the failure of governments to fulfill their obligations, such as providing basic services, addressing unemployment, or ensuring public safety.

Misinformation:

Misinformation or media influence is also one of the key factors behind riots. Media is supposed to have a sense of responsibility to not publish any news that can misguide the public. False narratives, news or even wrong information works in manipulating the minds of public. Sensationalism in media contributes to tension and add fuel to misguided people. Whom in term starts to behave in uncivilized manner and participating in riots.

Communication errors:

Lack of trust and effective communication in a society can further fuel the flames of unrest. Communication breakdowns different segments of society but when people feel unheard, or deceived, their frustration grows.  Lack of transparency in addressing societal concerns by the government, contribute in making peaceful protests in violent riots. Restoring the trust of public can only make these riots to stop.

Food shortage:

These riots are caused due to insufficient food supply or unequal food distribution. Mainly caused by harvest failure, poisoning of food, high price, transport problem, or attacks by pests. Food shortage make public too desperate, hence they starts to attack shops, farms, government buildings, or public property.

External force:

Riots happening in other regions can inspire similar actions to happen in neighbor country. In the world of social media, information regarding other regions can be easily gain with a single click. When youth comes face to face with such situation, they empathize with each other. In other words starts protesting to express their grievances , witch after some time turn into riots.

Conclusion

It is important to note that each riot is unique and influenced by the specific context and circumstances in which it occurs. To prevent riots, it is essential to address the root causes of societal dissatisfaction, promote equitable socioeconomic conditions, foster open and transparent communication, and build a foundation of trust between communities and authorities. By understanding the nature of riots society can work towards a more just, inclusive, and peaceful future.
