Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, died at the age of 63 when his chopper crashed on Sunday in the mountainous region in northwest Iran.
Accompanying him was Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, a hard-line diplomat, and others including his security team and flight attendants.
National security spokesman John Kirby stated that U.S. has expected Iran’s change in leadership to not effect its support to Palestine.
While thousands mourn the deaths, a lot of people also celebrated it on social media.
Iran’s state television reported that all the government offices and private businesses will be closed on Wednesday for the funerals of the martyrs with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei leading the prayer.
The burial of President Ebrahim Raisi will take place on Thursday in Mashhad, his birthplace.
The First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed as the country’s acting president, by the supreme leader, until the next elections on June 28.
For a smooth transition of power, Iran is expected to refrain from new rounds of escalation with Israel until the swearing in ceremony of a new president.
